New Delhi|Srinagar: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will probe the role of Maulvi Irfan Ahmad Waghay, a suspected terror mastermind arrested from Shopian, and Zamir Ahmad from Wakura, Ganderbal, between October 20 and 27. Waghay is among seven people held by the Jammu and Kashmir Police following the recovery of weapons and bomb-making chemicals in Faridabad, and the blast near the Red Fort in Delhi on Monday that has so far claimed 13 lives.
According to police, Waghay, a Hafiz-e-Quran, memorised the holy Quran in his hometown of Shopian and later completed a Mufti course from a seminary in Srinagar before joining the Jama Masjid, where he lived in rented accommodation.
"Waghay came in touch with the doctors, probably during treatment at a hospital in Srinagar. They later stayed in contact and connected further on social media," said a senior police official.
The police have widened their investigation and are examining all contacts of the doctors arrested in the case. "Teams have been sent to Government Medical College, Srinagar, and GMC Anantnag to trace any links of the doctors currently in custody," another investigating official said.
The NIA has constituted a special team to probe the attack and will question Dr Adeel, arrested from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on November 5, and another accused arrested on November 7.
Officials said the group was influenced by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and had planned a vehicle-borne IED (VBIED) attack similar to the 2019 Pulwama bombing carried out by Adil Dar. The police on Wednesday recovered a second car, meant to be used as the VBIED by one of the suspects, from a village in Haryana.
Investigators also found that Waghay was in regular contact through VoIP with handlers in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Red Fort suicide bomber, Dr Umar Nabi, was closely associated with him. Dr Shaheen Sayeed, a resident of Lucknow and a teacher at Al-Falah University, has emerged as the financier and alleged India commander of JeM's women's wing, Jamaat-ul-Mominaat. Police are also probing Dr Muzammil Ganaie for multiple reconnaissance visits to the Red Fort in January, suspected to be part of a plan to target the monument on January 26 this year.
Meanwhile, the J&K Police on Wednesday continued investigations into the busted Jaish module and brought two more accused from Faridabad to Srinagar for questioning. Those detained include Dr Bilal and Hafeez Muhammad Ishtiaq, the Imam of Al-Falah Masjid in Faridabad.
