Japan's political uncertainty may slow down India engagements

New Delhi: Japan's ruling LDP has lost heavily for the first time in its history in the backdrop of major local grievances. The political uncertainty may slow down certain Indian engagements with Tokyo.

While India-Japan strategic and economic ties remain robust and on course, political instability in Japan may slow down engagements for the time being. The next edition of India-Japan annual summit that was being planned by the end of the year in Japan appears uncertain at this stage, it is learnt.

The two sides will be in talks to schedule the next summit once the next government in Japan is formed which at this stage appears to be heading towards a coalition regime.

Japan's incumbent prime minister Shigeru Ishiba's decision to call snap elections has boomeranged on the ruling LDP, according to Japan specialists. The opposition led by former PM Noda has made significant gains in the elections. LDP has come under intense scrutiny incidentally for some of the decisions made in the Shinzo Abe era.

On Monday, Ishiba described the election outcome, in which the ruling bloc lost its majority in the lower house, as "harsh".
