Global disorder can bring India, Europe closer: Former Italian PM Matteo Renzi at ET WLF

In a world of disorder and trade conflicts, India and Europe can establish a strong partnership, former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said at the event.

Renzi said globalisation is an opportunity and to descend into a trade war at this juncture would be unwise, given the emerging challenges. He was speaking on 'Europe, India, and the Next Phase of Global Economic Cooperation'.

"We need a change of vision. We need a lot of reforms. That is our time, and in this time, if we start with the trade war, as our American friends decided to do, we decided the most stupid thing for the future of the world--not (just) for the future of India or the future of Europe," he said. The former prime minister said Europe is facing a crisis due to a demographic decline. He said there is a case for a strong partnership with India and emphasised the need for an enhanced institutional dialogue to take it forward. "We have to move European leaders to understand (that) India is not a normal partner. India is the most populous country... India has a great tradition. India has an unbelievable level of technology. India is a country able to be the key partner," he said.

Renzi said, "Europe is in crisis, so Europe needs India. But India also needs Europe exactly because of (the challenges of) globalisation."

According to Renzi, the current debate on migration in Europe seems to be on ideological lines and a comprehensive view is not being taken. Citing Italy as example, the former prime minister pointed out that last year, less than 100,000 immigrants arrived in Italy. However, the number of Italians who left the country for education and jobs was double the number.

Pointing to lowering birth rates, Renzi said it is "not a decline of the demography, it is a collapse of demography, and if we don't consider that as a priority when discussing the future of Europe, we surely don't know what history is".

Slamming the tariff war unleashed by President Trump, Renzi said there is a new global disorder and India and Europe can play a constructive role by partnering up.

"We have a bad approach on tariffs. We accept every single decision of President Trump. President Trump calls European leaders to White House, but not as a deal maker. He decides the budget for defence. He decided the budget for energy," Renzi said, adding that the time has come for Europe to wake up and emerge as a new leader in a new world, leveraging its rich culture and history.
