China has officially opened the world’s highest bridge, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, a groundbreaking feat of engineering that stands 625 metres (2,051 feet) above a deep gorge in Guizhou province. The project, which took over three years to complete, surpasses the Beipanjiang Bridge (565 metres) — also located in Guizhou — as the world’s second-highest bridge.
A Record-Breaking Engineering Marvel
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge now holds the title of the highest bridge in the world, crossing a vast gorge with breathtaking views. Live drone footage from state media showed vehicles making their way across the massive structure, while its blue support towers stood tall amid the clouds.
The bridge features a main span of 1,420 metres, making it the world’s largest-span bridge built in a mountainous area, according to state news agency Xinhua.
Inauguration Ceremony and Public Reaction
The bridge’s opening was marked by a grand ceremony attended by engineers, officials, and locals. Crowds gathered to celebrate the milestone, expressing pride and enthusiasm in live interviews broadcast by state media.
Zhang Yin, head of Guizhou’s transport department, highlighted its importance: “The opening of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge reduces travel time between the two sides from two hours to two minutes,” she said.
She further added that the bridge will boost regional transportation, bringing new momentum to the area’s economic and social development.
Guizhou: The Land of Bridges
Guizhou province, with its rugged and hilly terrain, has become famous for its spectacular bridges. According to Xinhua, nearly half of the world’s 100 highest bridges are located in this province, underscoring its reputation as a hub of bridge engineering.
The Beipanjiang Bridge, also in Guizhou, previously held the record for the highest bridge before being overtaken by Huajiang.
Infrastructure Growth in China
Over the past few decades, China has poured significant investment into infrastructure and urbanisation projects, driving its rapid economic growth. Mega-projects like the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge reflect the country’s ambition to connect remote regions and support development through state-of-the-art transportation networks.
World Records in Perspective
While the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is now the highest bridge in the world (measured from the deck to the ground), the record for the tallest bridge structure still belongs to France’s Millau Viaduct, which stands 343 metres high.
