The Indian Premier League is in its 18th installment at present. Multiple new faces have been spotted in this edition and over the years. There has been a considerable amount of players who have not been able to make a mark in this ever-dynamic league. and MS Dhoni stand tall as extraordinary outliers.

Other than Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey, these two are the only cricketers who have played in every season so far. Over the past many years, the duo have scripted history for Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. Rohit and Dhoni have won five titles each for MI and CSK, respectively. The two haven't led their sides since the commencement of the previous edition though.

With set to resume after a nine-day hiatus due to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, it serves as an apt moment to revisit the most-recent IPL titles Rohit and Dhoni clinched, how the respective finals unfolded, and other details in relation to the same.

The 2020 edition of the IPL was the second consecutive season MI emerged as the champions of the marquee T20 league. MI secured victory by five wickets with eight deliveries to spare at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on November 10, 2020.  

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Delhi Capitals lost three wickets inside the powerplay. The then-skipper, Shreyas Iyer (65* off 50), and wicketkeeper-batter, Rishabh Pant (56 off 38), restored order into the innings with a 96-run stand. Trent Boult (3/30 in four overs) was the pick of the bowlers. Barring a run-out, the three other wickets were shared between Jayant Yadav (1/25 in four overs) and Nathan Coulter-Nile (2/29 in four overs).

In response, MI's powerplay was in stark contrast to that of their opponents. A total of 61 runs were scored for the loss of just one wicket. Rohit Sharma notched up his first half-century in more than a month. After Rohit was dismissed for 68 (51), his side lost a couple of more wickets. However, that did not prevent them from becoming the second team to defend their IPL title. Axar Patel (0/16 in four overs) was the standout performer for DC.

won a pulsating contest against Gujarat Titans by five wickets and zero balls to spare. The game had to be reduced to a 15-over contest after rain interrupted during the first-half of the fixture. The Men in Yellow prevented GT from winning their second title in as many seasons.

The host's innings ended at 214/4. Sai Sudharsan (96 off 47) ended up four shot of registering his maiden IPL ton. Wriddhiman Saha (54 off 39) and Shubman Gill (39 off 20) contributed well at the top of the order. Maheesh Theekshana was the most economical bowler for CSK, conceding only 36 runs in four overs.

CSK had a blazing start to their run-chase. Each of the top four batters contributed with significant totals. A cameo from Ravindra Jadeja (15* off 6) helped the Dhoni-led side lift their fifth title, their first after the win in 2018. Noor Ahmad (2/17 in three overs), now representing CSK, was the pick of the bowlers for GT back then.
