Imperial College London, one of the world's top educational institutions, is now going to further strengthen its presence in India. The college has recently announced that it will set up an international research hub in Bengaluru, named Imperial Global India.
The center is planned to start in May 2025 and aims to deepen scientific, educational, and technological relationships between India and the United Kingdom (UK). The hub to be opened in Bengaluru will become the center of joint research projects between Imperial College and India's leading teaching and research institutions.
This office will act as a contact center, from where work will be done together in the fields of science, technology, and education. Through this, collaboration will be promoted not only between educational institutions but also between organizations related to the fields of government, industry, and innovation.
The partnership will get expanded.
Imperial College is already working with many big institutes in India. These include institutes like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), AIIMS, IIT Bombay, Delhi and Kharagpur, and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. These partnerships include research on topics like climate change, resistance against antibiotics, and clean energy.
Two prominent scientists will lead.
The opening of the Bengaluru hub will give further impetus to these partnerships and create a permanent base for research. The responsibility of this new hub has been entrusted to two experienced scientists. Professor Sanjeev Gupta, who is an expert in earth science, has previously done research on rivers and groundwater with IIT Kanpur.
Dr. Elena Dickman is an expert in biomaterials and circular economy. She is working with researchers in India to reuse old solar panels and make them usable in construction work. Both scientists will spend time in India and collaborate deeply with local institutes.
This initiative is in line with the new education policy.
The new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 implemented by the Government of India states that the world's top universities will be allowed to open campuses or research centers in India. Imperial's move is in line with this policy. This will provide world-class education and research opportunities to Indian students and will help connect India with international education standards.
A new turn will come in India-UK relations.
Through the Imperial Global India Hub, cooperation between India and the UK in the fields of education, science, and innovation will get a new direction. This initiative will also help in advancing objectives such as economic growth, sustainable future and improvement in quality of life between the two countries. Also, it will further strengthen India's role at the international level.
