Social media platform Meta said that in March it has banned 23,000 Facebook pages and accounts. All these pages were involved in fraud and were especially targeting people from India and Brazil. All these accounts and pages were connected to the network which was cheating people using new technology. This action has been taken to maintain safety on the platform. Through this, action has been taken especially against those activities which are misleading the users.
How did they cheat?
These fraudsters were promoting fake investment apps and gambling sites. For this, they used to misuse the names and faces of well-known finance experts, cricketers and big businessmen, so that people could easily fall into their trap. Through these fake accounts, people were called on messaging apps on the pretext of giving investment advice and then their money was swindled by sending them to fake websites.
Meta's response and security of users
Meta said that in the month of March, more than 23,000 such Facebook pages and accounts were removed which were doing such fraud. The company is also taking many steps to make users aware. People are being given tips and important information to avoid online investment and payment fraud, so that they can protect themselves from these dangers.
Why is India on the target?
In India, crores of people use Meta's platforms like Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Facebook alone has more than 375 million (37.5 crore) users in India. This is why such frauds are a big concern for India, and Meta is constantly emphasizing on technology, policy and public awareness to stop them.
