Maura Higgins reveals she won't speak to her dad again: 'I don't think I've ever forgiven him'

Reality TV star wore her heart on her sleeve as she opened up about the reason she stopped speaking to her father.

The icon, 33, sat down with star Paul Brunson for a vulnerable chat about her life, relationships and childhood. During the interview, Maura admitted she stopped speaking to her father, Seamus, after she had a 'horrendous' phone call with him.

When she was growing up, Maura said he 'wasn't really around' as he was busy working to provide for the family. However, after her parents divorced, 'things got worse'. At one point, Maura thought her mum, Sharon, was 'dead' when she had a nervous breakdown from the split. Maura's mum collapsed in the kitchen, but thankfully, Maura's sister was there to help and call the ambulance.

However, it wasn't until after she appeared on Love Island in 2019 that her relationship with her father ended. She confessed to Paul: "It's kind of . We haven't spoken in a few years now. My dad spoke to me not very nice. I'm not saying it was just a bit of an argument. It was horrendous where I physically couldn't breathe after the phone call.

"I thought to myself, 'I wouldn't let a partner talk to me like that. I wouldn't let a friend talk to me like that. I'm not going to let my dad talk to me like that'. But also, I think if I dig deep, I don't think I've ever forgiven my dad for not being there for me when my best friend passed away. And he wasn't there for me."

She added: "I know my father [struggled in the divorce too] but he just did things that just was not..." before Paul finished the sentence for her by saying: "Not what a father should do." Maura was born and raised in Ballymahon, County Longford. The star trained to be a hairdresser and worked in the local salon before taking up part-time modelling.

Maura's parents were young parents, with Maura being born only two days after her mum turned 21 years old. The former couple had four children by the time Sharon was 23. She has two sisters; Becki and Louise and one brother.

Speaking about being such a young mum, Sharon once said: "They were like steps on the stairs. I had three in nappies at one time. I kind of grew up with them so I knew the tricks of teenagers - sure I was a teenager myself - they wouldn't pull the wool over my eyes. It's great, because when they get to their teenage years, you build a great friendship because you're young with them."
