David Coote, the referee who made headlines with his contentious decision to award West Ham a penalty during stoppage time in Manchester United's 2-1 defeat, will be back on duty just three days after the incident, as confirmed by the EFL and PGMOL. The narrative surrounding United's recent loss took a twist when it was decided that it was time to part ways with manager Erik ten Hag.
The Dutchman had been at the helm for over two seasons, securing two cup victories during his tenure,, with Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim being touted as a potential successor. However, the final straw that led to this shake-up - the 2-1 defeat at London Stadium - arguably should not have unfolded the way it did.
Referee Coote awarded the home side a crucial injury-time penalty, which Jarrod Bowen successfully converted past Andre Onana under highly disputed circumstances. In the heat of defending his penalty area, Matthijs de Ligt collided with Hammers striker Danny Ings, who fell over the Dutch defender's leg.
Both players were making genuine attempts to play the ball in a crowded box. VAR concluded that there was 'sufficient contact' on Ings to warrant a clear and obvious error, prompting an on-field review. As often happens in such situations, Coote changed his initial decision after consulting the monitor, reports .
Despite the ongoing managerial changes and the continued outrage from former officials, football moves on swiftly. Coote is set to take on his next officiating role in Manchester City's Carabao Cup clash with Tottenham in London on Wednesday might - a highlight of the round.
This was confirmed by the EFL in collaboration with PGMOL, stating that he will serve as the fourth official to on-field referee Rob Jones at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Premier League has also released their match official appointments for the upcoming weekend, with Coote involved once again, this time acting as VAR for Tottenham Hotspur's home game against Aston Villa.
