Body language expert's verdict on Donald Trump and Melania's relationship after kiss

A body language expert has given her verdict on and ’s relationship after they were spotted sharing an 'awkward' kiss at his rally.

The couple briefly embraced onstage in front of huge crowds at the New York arena last night after the 54-year-old former first lady introduced her 78-year-old husband, describing him as the "next commander-in-chief". She had just given a five-minute speech on her husband's vision for America, but for many the most memorable part was, with Melania appearing to pull away slightly and many noting a lack of chemistry.

Now, body language expert Judi James has told the that Donald Trump's "mixed signalling" as he approached his wife was likely to blame for the mishap.

She said: "The kiss itself is lacking in synchronicity, partly because of Trump's mixed signalling as he approaches his wife. He throws both his arms out with his fingers splayed in a gesture that looks less like an intent to hug and more like a man wanting to register and display his success to his wife.

"Her hands go out, but her elbows remain tucked inward, which looks like a truncated empty embrace. These gestures look similar but they are not synchronized. Trump's arms begin to drop as he gets closer, but Melania is now offering some form of a hug. In the end her hands hold his waist and he places his hands on her shoulders, allowing him to steer the kiss.

"Both pucker and raise their chins for a fashionista-style air kiss. But there are micro-gestures of actual affection within the kiss as she adds a small nuzzling, and he appears to turn his head in the air in a pleasure display before they kiss on the other cheek too. Trump's second cheek kiss is a big smacker, showing how pleased he is of Melania and himself."

Judi also offered her analysis of Melania's speech, and said she had used "tricks and techniques favoured by rock stars to rev the audience up" as she cast off her previously "daunted and rigid" onstage persona. "Her script suggests she is now being used to fill the crater-size hole of intellect, class and taste that is left thanks to the Trump/Hulk Hogan-style line up of the rest of the rally", she said.

Crude and racist language was used by a number of Trump's other guest speakers at the event on Sunday evening, with one stand-up comedian facing criticism today after he described Puerto Rico as a "floating island of garbage". David Rem, who grew up with Trump, meanwhile made bizarre remarks about the Democratic presidential candidate, labelling her "the Antichrist" and "the devil." Businessman Grant Cardone claimed that Harris "and her pimp handlers will destroy our country".
